Depending on its meaning, there may or may not be a plural (or, while theoretically possible, its use in the plural would not make sense, as in the present instance). Note the form of the L.sg, in which we clearly see the presence of phonetic [j], as Ї = [ji]. 2.3.3.4 Neuter nouns: mixed stems stress ss: прізвище 'surname' N./V. G. D. A. I. L. This noun has a degree of variation in the plural, with two possible stress patterns in two of the forms, and two instances of variation in ending: G.pl. (a zero ending with concomitant vowel alternation e-i, or -ей), and I.pi. The following noun is anomalous in its declensional pattern: from its N.sg. form one would expect it to be a hard-stem noun, but it clearly belongs here based on the plural paradigm: N./V. G. D. A.
