The pronoun 181 Я хотів би знати, о котрій (годині) вони будуть у Києві. І wonder at what time they will be in Kyiv. Який is used in the genitive case to convey 'whose', 'of whom', 'of which' in relative clauses (one tends not to get чий here): Он та людина, синові якої ми дали кошика. That's the person to whose son we gave the basket. (Note the position of якої and the direct object, кошик, in the genitive case.) 4.3.4 'HOW MUCH?' - 'HOW MANY?' скільки 'how much/many' N. G. D. A. I. L. ільк N. G. D. A. I. L. скільки скількох скільком скільки/скількох скількома на скількох и 'so much7'so many' стільки стількох стільком стільки/стількох стількома на стількох Н. Р. д. 3. О. м. н. р. д. 3. о. м. Скільки too can be used in direct and indirect questions. The preposition given with the locative above is purely for illustration. Note that both скільки and стільки are, when in the nominative or inanimate accusative, constructed with the genitive singular or plural of what is quantified, as appropriate; if nominative, the verb will be third-person singular and, if not non-past, then neuter. For the animate accusative and the other cases, there is agreement between the pronoun and the noun or noun phrase. Thus: Скільки Вас там було? How many of you were there? Вона боїться стількох екзаменів. She's afraid of so many exams. 4.4 DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS On the whole these pronouns precede the noun or noun phrase they qualify, if any. |
