The verb 241 6.4.2.1 Transitive verbs with an accusative direct object Сьогодні він знайшов готель. Чи знаєш цю студентку? Ти побачила Анну? Анна побачила Івана. Олексо, випий молоко! Батько купив хліба. ... поховайте мене на могилі. Людина створила культуру, а культура - людину. Today he found a hotel (ace). Do you know this/that (female) student? Did you see Anna? Anna saw Ivan. Oleksa, drink (up) the milk! Father bought (some) bread. .. . bury me in a grave ... (Shevch.) Man created culture, and culture (created) man. (KUM) Note the use of transitive verbs without an object, when reference is to a given action in general: Люблю читати. Треба їсти та пити. І like to read. One has to drink and eat. 6.4.2.2 Intransitive verbs without -ся Треба працювати. Діти люблять грати в парку. Чи можна сидіти тут? Будь ласка, говоріть повільно! Цілий день ми стояли в черзі. Мама спить. Чого ти так говориш? Лікар мовчав. One must work. Children like to play in the park. May I/can one sit here? Please speak slowly! We stood in a queue all day. Mum is sleeping. Why are you speaking in such a way? The doctor was silent (did not speak). 6.4.2.3 Intransitive verbs with <я At times the dividing line between 'intransitive' and 'reflexive' -ся verbs (compare 6.4.2.4) can be a fine one. The former essentially expresses 'doing X oneself, while the latter is more akin to 'doing X to oneself; very often an intransitive verb has a transitive partner (without -ся) that expresses 'doing X to another'. This is the case in the following: Вчитель знову розсердився. vs. Вчитель розсердив батька. Вони одружилися. vs. Борис вирішив одружити сина. Once again the teacher became angry. The teacher made father angry. They got married. Borys decided to marry (off) his son. |
