Note that in вода, the A.pl. is identical to the N./?/.; this is the case in all nouns denoting inanimate (non-living) beings. For animate beings, e.g. 'daughter' here, the A.p/. = G.pl. (this is also the case for masculine nouns; see 2.3.2). stress se: книжка 'book' The stress pattern of the following paradigm must be noted: the basic form does not have final stress, but stress shifts in the plural (the opposite direction to what is found in вода above). Like книжка the following decline in the same way: жінка 'wife', дошка 'board', 'plank'. There will be many words without stress shifting in the plural (see бригада below); most of the latter will either be borrowings from a West European language (or at least based on Latin or Greek roots) or, very simply, they will be long words, the product of word-formational processes and often denoting abstract notions (in simplistic terms: the more syllables, the less the tendency to shift stress). stress ss: бригада 'brigade' Бригада is an example of a feminine noun with no shifting stress whatsoever (stress is stable in this instance because it is a borrowing): |
