One large set of nouns always has this alternation, viz. those with the abstract noun suffix -ість, as in слабість 'weakness': N. G. D. A. I. L. V Singular - Однина слабість слабості слабості слабість слабістю слабості (слабосте!) Plural - Множина слабості слабостей слабостям слабості слабостями слабостях = N. Н. Р. д. 3. О. м. Кл. We see here that the two-consonant sequence -ст- cannot geminate (double) in the I.sg., and the preceding vowel is still -i-. The vocative is technically possible, but unlikely to be used for an abstract noun. Finally, compare the form осінь 'autumn', in which there is an i-e alternation: N. G. D. A. I. L. V. Singular осінь осені осені осінь осінню осені осене! - Однина Plural осені осеней осеням осені осенями осенях = N. Множина Н. Р. д. 3. О. м.
