The noun 65 2.3.1.4 Feminine declensions ending in a consonant: soft stems N. G. D. A. I. L. V. Singular -(ь) -i -i "(b) -Ю -i -e Plural і -ей -ям -і -ями -ях = N. Н. Р. д. 3. о. м. Кл. Large numbers of feminine nouns end in a palatalized consonant. Note the case forms that differ from those seen to this point: A.l.sg. (zero ending and -ю, respectively) and G.pl. (-ей instead of zero). The G.sg. as seen here is the same as in the soft and mixed -a feminines; in older books, however, the reader may in fact come across the now-archaic variant -и, which is the hard stem form. Likewise, this variant is sometimes used in current Ukrainian publications; however, the most recent orthographic dictionaries (1997, for example) still prescribe -i. Stress among these nouns tends to be extremely stable, such that the vast majority will be classified as belonging to the SS type; in spite of such stability, there will always be exceptions, as in the first example below. STRESS SS +: ПОВІСТЬ 'TALE' N. G. D. A. I. L. V. Singular - Однина повість повісті повісті повість повістю повісті повісте! Plural - Множина повісті повістей повістям повісті повістями повістях = N. н. р. д. 3. о. м. Кл. STRESS SS! СІЛЬ 'SALT' The example сіль has the same endings as повість, but there are two differences: (i) there is an alternation i-o (the latter appears in the root when a vowel immediately follows the final consonant: see Chapter 1 for a reminder), and (ii) before l.sg. -ю a single consonant is doubled, in which case the preceding vowel remains -i-: Singular - Однина Plural - Множина N. сіль солі Н. G. солі солей P.
