Plural - Множина хлопці хлопців хлопцям хлопців хлопцями хлопцях = N. н. р. д. 3. о. м. Кл. It must be remembered that ц can be soft in Ukrainian (hard before e), especially when it occurs word-finally; this paradigm illustrates the principle, as does робітниця above. In this instance we have no competing endings for each case, and stress is fixed. The Y.sg. must be noted, however: ц alternates with ч before the W.sg. -є (ц arose out of an original */:, which normally alternated with ч before -e). Compare молодець 'young fellow', 'lad' - V.sg. молодче! with the anticipated E + E stress shift. STRESS SE: учйтель/вчйтель 'TEACHER' The following example illustrates a declensional pattern (seen in the hard stems as well), in which stress shifts to the ending in the plural; вчитель 'teacher' is animate, as is clear from the A. sg IpL: N. G. D. A. I. L. V. Singular - Однина вчитель вчителя вчйтелеві,-ю вчителя вчителем вчителі,-еві вчителю! Plural - Множина вчителі вчителів вчителям вчителів вчителями вчителях = N. н. р. д. 3. о. м. Кл. STRESS SE: лікар 'PHYSICIAN' N. G. D. A. I. L. V. Singular - Однина лікар лікаря лікареві (-ю) лікаря лікарем лікареві (-і) лікарю! Plural - Множина лікарі лікарів лікарям лікарів лікарями лікарях = N. Н. Р. д. 3. о. м. Кл. The declension of this, and other nouns ending in -p, is not transparent if the N.5"g. is the point of departure (see the G.sg. in the dictionary, as usual); |
