during the development of the Ukrainian language, final soft -рь was
hardened, but the softness usually reappears in the presence of a vocalic ending
other than -e. Compare кобзар below.
The following (день 'day') is also representative of those soft-stem
masculines that do not admit variation within the paradigm (note, however, the
vowel-zero alternation, the vowel appearing only when there is no vocalic
ending):

The stress pattern of this particular noun does not allow it to be classified as
'stem-stressed' or 'end-stressed' in the strictest sense, as there is only ever a

Note the expected retraction of stress in the W.sg.; other nouns that decline in
the same way are воротар/воротаря (ЕЕ) 'gatekeeper', ключар/ключаря
(EE) 'steward', 'doorkeeper', et al A word like бібліотекар/бібліотекаря
(SS) 'librarian' has the same paradigm, except that - because stress precedes
the suffix -ap - stress is stable throughout, including the vocative.
