Note that Ukrainian surnames that are historically short-form adjectives
or past passive participles have lost their connection to the adjectival
declension, and are treated as regular nominal forms, in the singular as well as the
plural: Михайло Петрович Глух, Михайла Петровича Глуха, and so on,
pi. Глухи, Глухів, and similar, Михайло Іванович Кохан, Михайла
Івановича Кохана, and likewise,/?/. Кохани, Коханів, and so on.
Also note a special reminder regarding the use of masculine first/Christian
names + patronymic in the dative case. Because there are two dative singular
endings in the masculine noun (-ові and -y), the pattern must be: Степанові
Борисовичу.
2.3.5.2 Declension of feminine surnames
Feminine surnames need little comment, as most are feminine variants of
names seen above, for example, Лесева, Іванова, Іванишина, and so on, and
are declined as feminine adjectives throughout. However, it is important to
note the following:
(1) Masculine surnames of the type Лесів, Іванйшин can have two
corresponding feminine forms: Лесева, Іванишина, which decline as described, as
well as the unchanged masculine-looking variants Лесів, Іванйшин. If a
name appears as Ольга Іванів, Оксана Іванйшин, then the surname is not
declined: Ольга Іванів, Ольги Іванів, and such, Оксана Іванйшин, Оксани
Іванйшин, and so on.
(2) Feminine surnames ending in a consonant are in general indeclinable;
names containing the suffix -чук will be among the most visible of these:
Анна Мельничук, Анни Мельничук, and so on.
(3) This is also true of surnames that are historically short-form adjectives
or past passive participles: whereas the masculine surnames Глух, Кохан,
Молод, and so on will decline as masculine nouns, the feminine variants
lack an overt feminine marker, and will not decline: Ганна Молод, Ганни
Молод, and similar, Марія Глух, Марії Глух, and such.
(4) The common suffix -енко follows the same pattern: although declined
for males, surnames in -енко denoting females will not be declined, as in
Галина Шевченко, Галини Шевченко, and so on. This is in fact true of all
