The adjective 155 adjectival ending may be added directly to the stem, зуб 'tooth' - беззубий 'toothless'. In the ordering of the suffixes an initial component и (though it never begins a word in Ukrainian) precedes і, ї, й. 3.3.1 SUFFIXES In many of the pairs of suffixes given below, the second occurs after soft consonants terminating stems. All other variants are commented upon. Suffixes Notes Examples -ав-, -яв-, -ляв- -альн-, -іальн- -ан>, -ян- -анн-, -янн- -анськ-, -янськ- -іанськ- -аст-, -яст- Denominal and deadjectival. Sense of great quantity or, less often, incompleteness. Denominal (borrowed nouns). Denominal, quite frequent. Refers to material source or material used for something. Participial (past participle passive). Evaluative and superlative sense, with prefix не-. Denotes belonging to the deriving word. Denominal. The -c- may be inserted and related to the following suffix. May have intensive sense, sense of 'like the deriving noun', or simply being the adjectival form of the deriving noun. дірявий 'full of holes', кістлявий 'bony', 'nothing but bones', жовтавий 'yellowish' геніальний 'of genius', нормальний 'normal', 'related to the norm', документальний 'documentary' дерев'яний 'wooden', лляний 'flaxen', 'linen', водяний 'using water', e.g. млин 'mill', торф'яний 'made of'/'using peat' невблаганний 'implacable', 'inflexible', незрівнянний 'incomparable', 'unique' американський 'American' зуба(с)тий 'toothy', 'with large teeth', мишастий 'mouse-coloured', 'like a mouse', клітчастий 'made up of squares/cells' (note -к- > -ч- клітка 'square', 'cell'). |
