The adjective 167 3.4.2 ADJECTIVES CONSTRUCTED WITH CASES AND PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES How do we translate situations equivalent to English 'capable of, 'ready for', and similar expressions? Here we can see the adjective as controlling the construction. Here are a few such constructions (drawing substantially on Rusanovskij et al. 1986: 273-5) - note that the translations are necessarily occasionally approximate, since much will depend on context: 3.4.2.1 Adjective + genitive вартий worthy of He варте нюху табаки. It's not worth a fig. Він не гідний поваги. He's not deserving of respect. Вона зовсім не певна цього. She's not at all certain of it. Філіжанка повна води. The cup is full of water. свідомий aware/informed of Він нічого не свідомий. Не doesn't know a thing. гідний worthy of певний certain of повний full of 3.4.2.2 Adjective + dative близький near to вдячний grateful to винен guilty, at fault винен owe відомий known/famous to ворожий hostile to дорогий dear to потрібний necessary to протилежний opposite to рад glad of рівний equal to шкідливий harmful to близький серцю near to one's heart вдячний батькові (за гроші) grateful to father (for the money) Він сам тому винен.
