The verb 219 The reader is advised always to look up a given verb in a good dictionary (see the Bibliography) in cases of doubt, as the isg. and 2sg. or 3pl. forms are generally provided, with the mutation and place of stress indicated. All prefixed variants of the stems presented here are identical to the non-prefixed forms of the non-past. 6.3.1.1.4 Stems with the suffix -ну- A substantial number of Ukrainian verbs contain the suffix -ну-, one that frequently suggests a one-time or sudden action; accordingly, such verbs are often (but not always) perfective. Their conjugation is straightforward, involving the simple loss of -y- in the presence of the connector vowel and/or personal endings: пірнути' пірну пірнеш пірне пірнемо пірнете пірнуть to dive' крикнути' крикну крикнеш крикне крикнемо крикнете крикнуть Чо shout' зникнути зникну зникнеш зникне зникнемо зникнете зникнуть The stress pattern of this type is stable, as the examples suggest; exceptions to the rule with shifting stress will occur, but only rarely. 6.3.1.1.5 Irregular conjugation I verbs There are only two Conjugation I verbs that can be treated as irregular in one way or another: дати Чо give', with a truly anomalous conjugation (except for the 3pl., which is the Conjugation I form), and їхати Чо go (by vehicle)', in which the infinitive does not correspond to the forms of the non-past paradigm. Thus: дати дам даси дасть дамо дасте дадуть їхати їду ідеш їде ідемо їдете ЇДУТЬ Two further irregular verbs of the дати type belong to Conjugation II, on the basis of the 3pl. form (see 6.3.1.2 below).
