As many conditional constructions begin with 'if, it is important to note that
it is not якщо that is used, but the clearly conditional якби, коли б; the first
clause will begin with якби, but the following clause must contain би/б as
well, as if to emphasize the conditional nature of the whole (paralleling
English 'could/would' in the first example):
Якби він міг, то прийшов би. If he could, (then) he would come.
Якби пішов дощ, то ми могли б If it were to rain (start raining),
залишитися вдома. (then) we could stay at home.
Якби не було війни, усі ще жили б If there hadn't been a war, (then)
у своїх старих містечках. everyone would still be living in
their old little towns.
Якби ти не знайшов цю книжку, то If you hadn't found this book, you
не міг би готуватися до уроку. couldn't have prepared for the
lesson.

6.4.7 VERBS REQUIRING CASES OTHER THAN THE ACCUSATIVE
In addition to the vast numbers of Ukrainian verbs - strictly transitive governing the accusative case, and the large numbers of intransitive verbs
(with or without -ся), a number of common verbs require the use of other
cases: genitive, dative, and instrumental. The locative case occurs only with
prepositions, and verbs requiring the use of prepositions are detailed in 6.4.8.
Here we consider the accusative of animate beings (genitive for masculines in
the singular, for all living beings in the plural) to be a subset of the accusative,
and such constructions as бачу Івана are not included among verbs
governing the genitive. Other verbs may govern both the accusative and the genitive,
and these are described in 6.4.7.1.1.
6.4.7.1 Verbs governing the genitive
бажати 'wish' (4- dative of person)
Бажаємо тобі усього доброго. We wish you all the best.
боятися 'fear'
Боїшся собак? Are you afraid of dogs?
вчитися 'study'
Вчуся української мови. I'm studying the Ukrainian language.
навчати, навчити 'teach' (+ accusative of person)
Навчу вас цього уроку. І will teach you this lesson.
шкодувати 'begrudge' (+ dative of person)
He шкодуй мені грошей. Don't begrudge me money.
